Colin was my little brother. He was born when I was 3 1/2, and I was thrilled. From then on we were always together. We slept in the same room, shared a bath and we were very close and happy together.
Colin always lived life like life was made just for fun. He had a sparkle in his blue eyes all the time, and his cheeks must have always ached as he was always smiling ;-)
He was a good kid, but he had a cheeky wicked side, and he was a prankster, and he regularly embarrased my mum by pulling pranks on people he didn't even know when we were out lol.
He could write his name but he always wrote the "N" the wrong way round for some reason, and he had difficulty pronouncing the letter "R", so he couldn't say my name properly, but the last time I saw him alive, he said "goodbye Tracey" and he said it perfectly.
I saw him as I left for school and he was his usual bubbly self, but he was dead about an hour later.
My mum was cleaning downstairs and he was playing upstairs. When she was done, she went upstairs to get him, he was asleep on his bed, and she couldn't wake him, an ambulance was called and he opened his eyes in the ambulance for just a moment. He was rushed to A and E, and was pronounced dead at 9.20am, it took 2 days before we had a cause of death. He died of meningecoccal meningitis, but he didn't stand a chance as he never showed any signs or symptoms of it.
Four days later I had all the symptoms of meningitis except the rash, but all I had was a virus. I thought I was going to die too, and when I didn't, I didn't think it was fair. I felt guilty for years because of that, but I'm finally getting on with my life.
Colin was my soulmate, and he left a part of himself with me, as I'm now known as the cheeky one instead of the quiet girl I used to be.
I think of him every day, and I always smile to myself when I do!
